The C.E.S. Reality Gap

The Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas officially begins on Tuesday, but a tension that has run through the show for the last several years was already on display Monday, as many companies held news conferences showing off their newest gadgets. In many cases, the companies were touting larger, clearer — and more expensive — televisions. On the one hand, these televisions were impressive technological achievements; on the other, it is unclear how relevant they are to the average consumer. (Brian X. Chen wrote about how the television industry is struggling with this dynamic for Monday’s newspaper.) C.E.S. 2013 Dispatches from the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. LG said that it would begin selling a 55-inch, $12,000 OLED television this March, and Sharp said that later this year it would begin selling its own Ultra High-Definition televisions, also known as 4K televisions because they have four times as many pixels as their high-definition predecessors. Samsung showed an 85-inch 4K television and promised a 110-inch television would come later this year. This is the kind of eye candy that draws people to C.E.S.

//Celebrities: Justin Bieber caught smoking pot

Let the Justin Bieber Big Pot Scandal of 2013 begin. Days after a paparazzo was killed while trying to take pictures of Bieber's Ferrari, photos have emerged of the 18-year-old singer smoking what looks a lot like a marijuana cigarette at a big party inside a Newport Beach hotel room on Jan. 2, says TMZ. TMZ claims it obtained the snaps of Bieber holding an alleged blunt and laughing with friends, including 19-year-old rapper Lil Twist, who was driving Bieber's car at the time the paparazzo was killed on a highway in Los Angeles on Jan. 1. According to sources at the party, Lil Twist and his brother were the ones dishing out the pot to guests. After the photos surfaced, Bieber took to his Twitter to issue an apology of sorts. "Everyday growing and learning. trying to be better. u get knocked down, u get up," he wrote last night. "Back on tour tomorrow. ready to see u all smile. time to do what im supposed to be doing. performing. #BELIEVEtour." TMZ reported last week that the photographer who was struck by a car and killed while trying to photograph Bieber's car told colleagues he saw the singer smoking pot earlier that day. ///California public TV icon Huell Howser dead at 67

California public television icon Huell Howser has died, his longtime station said Monday, an announcement that set off a flood of heartfelt condolences from his fans in the Golden State and beyond. He was 67. The Tennessee native quietly retired in late November after 25 years in which he became a household name in his adopted state as host of "California's Gold" and other televised travelogues on KCET. He died Sunday night at his home in the Los Angeles area, said Ryan Morris of Huell Howser Productions. "Huell elevated the simple joys and undiscovered nuggets of living in our great state," KCET said in a statement. "... Most importantly, he reminded us to find the magic and wonderment in our lives every day." Howser grew up in Tennessee, graduated from the University of Tennessee, worked on a U.S. senator's staff and served in the U.S. Marine Corps, according to a biography posted on his company website. He then launched his television career at WSM in Nashville. He moved on to a job hosting a magazine-style TV series at WCBS in New York before landing in Los Angeles in 1981 as a reporter for KCBS. Six years later, Howser joined forces with KCET, a public television station, to produce a program known as "Videolog" showcasing the stories of all types of people. That led to "California's Gold" and six other series about life in the Golden State, including "Visiting with Huell Howser," "Road Trip with Huell Howser," "California's Golden Parks," "California's Green," "California's Water" and "Downtown." In addition to California, his shows could be seen in Oregon, Nevada and Tennessee. Less than 20 minutes after KCET posted news of Howser's death on its Facebook page, more than 150 fans had posted responses mourning his loss and remembering his impact on California and their lives. They remembered him as "amazing," a "favorite" and "one-of-a-kind talent" who also possessed a "kind curiosity." One man said that news of Howser's death "brought tears to my eyes like I lost a friend," and another remarked that "Sunday evenings will not be the same." "So I guess God needed a host for 'Heaven's Gold,'" wrote another Facebook commenter. "We will miss you, but you will live on ... and on."

//Huell Howser, Host of California's Gold, Dead at 67

California is a little less golden today. Huell Howser, beloved host of California's Gold among other television programs, has died. He was 67. "We are deeply saddened by the news of Huell's passing. This is a tremendous personal and professional loss to his friends and colleagues, as well as his legions of fans," Los Angeles television station KCET, the home of Howser's travel shows, said Monday in a statement. David R. Ellis dead at 60 The eternally curious host was celebrated for his love of all things California. In addition to California's Gold, Howser was also behind the shows California's Golden Parks, Road Trip With Huell Howser, Visiting…With Huell Howser and more. The seasoned TV man wrote, produced and edited most of his programs. In late November, he announced his retirement. Often visiting famous—and not-so-famous—California landmarks, Howser approached each episode with his trademark enthusiasm. "That's amazing," he would muse in his Tennessee drawl during tours of historic sites and cat litter factories alike. Howser's fanbase was wide—in addition to California viewers tuning in to his programs, the host was lovingly spoofed on an episode of The Simpsons.>>>>>>>>>
