Stocks higher in shadow of 'fiscal cliff'
NEW YORK — On Monday, the stock market was as choppy as the "fiscal cliff" deal-making that has been yanking it around.
U.S. stocks struggled for direction on the last day of the year, with the "fiscal cliff" just hours away and Republicans and Democrats yet to hammer out a budget deal.
The Dow Jones industrial average opened lower, with investors disappointed that politicians hadn't reached an agreement over a weekend of terse, stop-and-go negotiating. With no clarity on whether a deal would get done, and what it would look like if it did, the Dow spent the morning flitting between small gains and losses.

Commander Kevin Ford and Flight Engineers Chris Hadfield and Tom Marshburn sent this video greeting for their best wishes for a happy 2013. Because the ISS travels around the Earth every hour and a half, the crew will have ample opportunity to celebrate the arrival of 2013 all day long.

Kanye West and Kim Kardashian are still on track to ring in the New Year in Las Vegas with the most famous fetus in Hollywood.
Kim Kardashian delivered a baby bombshell herself Monday, telling the Daily News she still planned to shake her pregnant assets as the host of a New Year's Eve party in Las Vegas.
"She'll be here," said Kelsey Lima, a coordinator for the pricey party at 1 Oak in the Mirage resort. "She'll definitely be here to count down to midnight, but obviously she won't be partying hard."

And the Oscar for year-ending baby news goes to Kim Kardashian.
The reality fashion powerhouse has confirmed that she's pregnant.
Kardashian, 32, took to her official site to post the following on New Year's Eve: "It's true!! Kanye (West) and I are expecting a baby. We feel so blessed and lucky and wish that in addition to both of our families, his mom and my dad could be here to celebrate this special time with us. Looking forward to great new beginnings in 2013 and to starting a family. Happy New Year!!! Xo"
She has spoken for years in interviews of her wish to be a mom. In September she said on ABC'sThe View: "Kids is definitely something I want, I think I wanted that before."
And the news comes as Kardashian is still battling to exit her brief marriage to NBA player Kris Humphries. She and Humphries were famously married for 72 days, following a lavish televised gala, and are now fighting to settle their divorce. They are due back in court mid-February to set a trial date to either dissolve or annul the marriage.
That didn't stop Kardashian from stepping out with her long-time friend West, 35. They took their romance public in March. And on Sunday night, the rapper announced at a concert that his girlfriend is with child. He told the crowd of more than 5,000 at Revel Resort's Ovation Hall in song form: "Now you having my baby." Kardashian was in the audience and according to E!, which airs her family reality show, she's about 12 weeks along.

Hillary Clinton hospitalized after doctors discover blood clot
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was hospitalized Sunday after doctors discovered a blood clot during a follow-up exam related to a concussion she suffered this month, her spokesman said. She is expected to remain at New York Presbyterian Hospital for the next 48 hours so doctors can monitor her condition and treat her with anticoagulants, said Philippe Reines, deputy assistant secretary of state. "Her doctors will continue to assess her condition, including other issues associated with her concussion," Reines said. "They will determine if any further action is required." Reines did not specify where the clot was discovered

While 2012 was an uneven year, it had several highlights, including the debut of the first iPad with a Retina display, the mid-year announcement of iOS 6, and then the near-simultaneous releases of two new iPods, the iPhone 5, and two new iPads before the holidays. With substantial iPad and iPad mini updates expected in 2013, it’s no surprise that the new year is shaping up to be very exciting indeed.
Once again, we are beyond thrilled to be hosting the largest iLounge Pavilion in the history of the International Consumer Electronics Show—this year, with over 120,000 square feet and 500 exhibitors devoted to iPad, iPhone, iPod, and Mac products. The 2013 International CES officially kicks off on January 8, and there will be plenty of news and events before the doors open. Our editors will be there for all of it.

NFL playoff schedule: 49ers secure bye with Vikings win over Packers

Adrian "All Day, Purple Jesus" Peterson, indeed! About 15 minutes after the San Francisco 49ers defeated the Arizona Cardinals, the 49ers received a huge gift from the Great White North. The Minnesota Vikings pulled off the upset win at home over the Green Bay Packers, providing the 49ers with the No. 2 seed and always necessary first round bye. The Vikings secured their own spot in the playoffs with the win and will travel to Lambeau Field for a rematch of a pretty awesome matchup today. That means the Seattle Seahawks will travel to face the winner of the Washington Redskins-Dallas Cowboys Sunday Night Football contest. The high seed from those four teams will travel to San Francisco in two weeks, while the low seed will travel to Atlanta to face the top-seeded Falcons. For the 49ers, the bye will be particularly big. Defensive tackle Justin Smith is recovering from a partially torn triceps muscle, and every extra day off helps. He will need surgery in the offseason, but he believes he can gut it out through the playoffs. I imagine he plays in two weeks, but I doubt we get any significant confirmation between now and then. Smith will likely get very little practice as he rests that arm. The other question will be what to do at the kicker position. David Akers was horrible in the first half, and only slightly better in the second half before injuring his ankle on a PAT. It will be interesting to see if the 49ers bring anybody in for at least a workout before the divisional round. For now, though, we get to take a moment to relax and enjoy a hard fought division title and bye. The 49ers have a lot of work to do if they want to make any sort of noise in the playoffs. Fortunately, they have time to assess things and make some adjustments. GO NINERS!

Bethenny Frankel and husband of 2 years separating
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Bethenny Frankel and husband Jason Hoppy are separating.
The 42-year-old TV personality, chef, author and entrepreneur told The Associated Press Sunday that the split brings her "great sadness.""This was an extremely difficult decision that as a woman and a mother, I have to accept as the best choice for our family," Frankel said. "We have love and respect for one another and will continue to amicably co-parent our daughter who is and will always remain our first priority. This is an immensely painful and heartbreaking time for us."
Frankel and Hoppy were married in 2010 and have a daughter, Bryn, who was born that same year. The couple's courtship and marriage were documented in two reality series, "Bethenny Getting Married?" and "Bethenny Ever After..." Frankel gained fame as a star of "The Real Housewives of New York City." Since her stint on the Bravo show, she has written four books, released a fitness video and founded her Skinnygirl line of cocktails, shapewear and nutritional supplements.
She launched a talk show, "Bethenny," over the summer that is set to air nationally on Fox stations in 2013.

UFC 155 bonuses: Miller, Lauzon, Duffee, Moraga earn $65,000 awards
Duffee earned the "Knockout of the Night" award, Moraga won "Submission of the Night" and Miller and Lauzon picked up "Fight of the Night" honors.
MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) learned of the winners and bonus amounts at the night's post-event press conference, where they were announced by UFC President Dana White.
UFC 155 took place at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The event's main card aired on pay-per-view following prelims on FX and Facebook.
Miller (22-4 MMA, 11-3 UFC) spent the first round battering Lauzon (22-8 MMA, 9-5 UFC) and bloodying him relentlessly with elbows and fists. But in the second, Lauzon was able to start to mount a comeback. And in the third, he went after it with gusto – though his submission attempts proved to be too little, too late. Still, it was the one fight out of the first four on the main card that had the crowd on its feet.
Duffee (8-2 MMA, 2-1 UFC) made a triumphant return to the UFC after a lengthy absence and survived a few rough moments with Philip De Fries (9-2 MMA, 2-2 UFC) to notch a first-round TKO. Duffee landed several big bombs with De Fries pushed up against the fence, and then a giant uppercut dropped him for good.
Moraga (12-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) spent the first two rounds of his fight against Chris Cariaso (14-4 MMA, 4-2 UFC) on the wrong end of the striking game. But in the third, Moraga was able to get the fight to the fence, and he transitioned from a front headlock to a standing guillotine that eventually was too much for Cariaso.
UFC 155 Results: Cain Velasquez Reclaims Heavyweight Title
COMMENTARY | The UFC 155 main card got off to a dull start, but Jim Miller and Joe Lauzon reenergized the crowd, putting on an entertaining show MMA fans won't forget anytime soon.
Here are the results of the entire UFC 155 fight card held on Dec. 29, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas:
Cain Velasquez def. Junior dos Santos
Cain looked like a completely different man during his UFC 155 rematch against dos Santos, aggressively pressuring the Brazilian during the opening round. He hurt dos Santos with a big right hook early in the fight, dragging "Cigano" to the ground shortly after. Junior kept trying to get back up, but Cain refused to let go, controlling the remainder of the round with his wrestling.
Dos Santos did a good job of getting back to his feet as the fight progressed, but he didn't have any answers for Cain's takedowns. Velasquez dominated the remainder of their fight with his wrestling, pressuring dos Santos on the ground and against the cage.
The Octagon-side judges scored the bout 50-45, 50-44, and 50-43, all in favor of Velasquez who reclaims the UFC's heavyweight title.
Jim Miller def. Joe Lauzon
Miller came out swinging at UFC 155, hitting Lauzon with everything besides the kitchen sink in the opening round. Within a few minutes, Lauzon's face was a bloody mess. Miller switched things up in the second round, immediately taking "J-Lau" down. He transitioned to mount shortly after, landing some vicious shots in the process.
However, Lauzon turned things around with two minutes left in the round, sweeping to top position. He stayed on top for the remainder of the round, even threatening with an inverted heel-hook.
Miller decided to keep the fight standing during the third round, and he went right back to picking Lauzon apart. To his credit, Lauzon refused to quit, landing a few hard shots of his own. He even tried to steal the victory in the final seconds of the bout, holding on to a guillotine choke as time ran out.
Unfortunately for Lauzon, it was too little too late, as all three judges scored the fight 29-28 in favor of Miller.
Definitely one of the most entertaining MMA fights in 2012.
Constantinos Philippou def. Tim Boetsch
Boetsch got off to a good start at UFC 155, roughing up Philippou against the cage and on the ground in the first round. However, he apparently broke his right hand during one of their exchanges.
Boetsch didn't look the same in the second round, unable to get the fight back on the canvas. He decided to pull guard, but that only made things worse, as Philippou landed some vicious shots on the ground. Battered and bloodied up, Tim decided to pull guard again, and Philippou pounded away. Referee Kim Winslow gave him every chance to fight back, but "The Barbarian" didn't have anything left, forcing her to step in and save him at 2:11 of the third round.
Yushin Okami def. Alan Belcher
The UFC 155 rematch between the two went a lot like their first encounter, with Yushin dominating the fight with his wrestling. Belcher had a few moments during the bout, and he even got some help from referee Chris Tognoni, who didn't seem to be a fan of the ground game, unfairly forcing the fight back up a few times.
However, Yushin's wrestling was too much for Belcher. All three Octagon-side judges gave Okami the nod.
Derek Brunson def. Chris Leben
Brunson came out with a smart gameplan at UFC 155, quickly closing the distance and taking Leben to the ground. He kept Leben grounded for the majority of the first round.
After getting put on his back again early in the second round, Chris managed to keep the fight standing for the remainder of the round. However, Brunson held his own in the striking department, and he had some more success with his takedowns in the final round. All three judges scored the fight for Brunson who pulls off a mild upset in his UFC debut.
