Stocks higher in shadow of 'fiscal cliff'

NEW YORK — On Monday, the stock market was as choppy as the "fiscal cliff" deal-making that has been yanking it around. U.S. stocks struggled for direction on the last day of the year, with the "fiscal cliff" just hours away and Republicans and Democrats yet to hammer out a budget deal. The Dow Jones industrial average opened lower, with investors disappointed that politicians hadn't reached an agreement over a weekend of terse, stop-and-go negotiating. With no clarity on whether a deal would get done, and what it would look like if it did, the Dow spent the morning flitting between small gains and losses.

Happy New Year from the Space Station Crew

Video: Happy New Year from the Space Station Crew

The six Expedition 34 crew members aboard the International Space Station will be watching from above as people around the world ring in the new year. Commander Kevin Ford and Flight Engineers Chris Hadfield and Tom Marshburn sent this video greeting for their best wishes for a happy 2013. Because the ISS travels around the Earth every hour and a half, the crew will have ample opportunity to celebrate the arrival of 2013 all day long.

Kanye West and Kim Kardashian are still on track to ring in the New Year in Las Vegas with the most famous fetus in Hollywood.

Kim Kardashian delivered a baby bombshell herself Monday, telling the Daily News she still planned to shake her pregnant assets as the host of a New Year's Eve party in Las Vegas. "She'll be here," said Kelsey Lima, a coordinator for the pricey party at 1 Oak in the Mirage resort. "She'll definitely be here to count down to midnight, but obviously she won't be partying hard."

Kim Kardashian confirms: "Kanye and I are expecting a baby"

And the Oscar for year-ending baby news goes to Kim Kardashian. The reality fashion powerhouse has confirmed that she's pregnant. Kardashian, 32, took to her official site to post the following on New Year's Eve: "It's true!! Kanye (West) and I are expecting a baby. We feel so blessed and lucky and wish that in addition to both of our families, his mom and my dad could be here to celebrate this special time with us. Looking forward to great new beginnings in 2013 and to starting a family. Happy New Year!!! Xo" She has spoken for years in interviews of her wish to be a mom. In September she said on ABC'sThe View: "Kids is definitely something I want, I think I wanted that before." And the news comes as Kardashian is still battling to exit her brief marriage to NBA player Kris Humphries. She and Humphries were famously married for 72 days, following a lavish televised gala, and are now fighting to settle their divorce. They are due back in court mid-February to set a trial date to either dissolve or annul the marriage. That didn't stop Kardashian from stepping out with her long-time friend West, 35. They took their romance public in March. And on Sunday night, the rapper announced at a concert that his girlfriend is with child. He told the crowd of more than 5,000 at Revel Resort's Ovation Hall in song form: "Now you having my baby." Kardashian was in the audience and according to E!, which airs her family reality show, she's about 12 weeks along.

NFL Playoff schedule 2013: Seahawks-Redskins highlights slate of great Wild Card Round matchups

As Kenny laid out in a timely fashion last night, the NFL Playoffs schedule has been set. With the Redskins locking up the NFC East last night with their big win over the Cowboys, Washington secured the No.4 seed and the honor, nay, privilege of hosting the Seahawks to D.C. next Sunday at 1:30 pm PST. Here's another look at what's in store for the first two rounds of the playoffs: Wild Card Round Saturday, January 5th, 2013: (6) Bengals at (3) Texans: 1:30 PST on NBC (6) Vikings at (3) Packers: 5:30 PST on NBC Sunday, January 6th, 2013: (5) Colts at (4) Ravens: 10:00 AM PST on CBS (5) Seahawks at (4) Redskins 1:30 PM PST on FOX Divisional Round Saturday, January 12, 2013: (1) Broncos host lowest-remaining AFC seed, 1:30 PM PST (2) 49ers host highest-remaining NFC seed, 5:00 PM PST Sunday, January 13, 2013: (1) Falcons host lowest-remaining NFC seed, 10:00 AM PST (2) Patriots host highest-remaining AFC seed, 1:30 PM PST I really can't say enough about how excited I am for this year's NFL Playoffs. Every year's field is pretty exciting, naturally, but with the Colts, Redskins, and of course, the Seahawks getting spots in the post-season, the year of the rookie QB 'big three' lasts just a little longer. The Colts will have to get past Ray Rice and the Ravens in Baltimore, which stands to be a really fun game, and the fanfare around Russell Wilson and Robert Griffin's big battle will be insane. Who would have guessed coming into 2012 that these three teams would be making a playoff run and represent three of the hottest offenses in the NFL? Weird. Meanwhile, the Texans are struggling, and will face a team that I actually like a lot in Cincinnati, in a repeat of last year's first-round AFC Wildcard matchup, which saw rookie T.J. Yates lead Houston past rookie Andy Dalton and the Bengals. Dalton, A.J. Green, Geno Atkins, and the rest of the upstart Cincinnati squad will try to make up for their first-round departure last year by getting past a team that, for a while, looked to be a lock for the #1 seed in the AFC. Finally, in a rematch of yesterday's 37-34 barnburner between the Vikings and Packers, Aaron Rodgers and company will have to beat the team that kept them from the #2 seed and a first-round bye. Adrian Peterson is averaging over 200 yards per game against the Packers this year, and while it looked for a couple weeks that the Vikings were spiraling out of control, they regained some momentum and beat the Bears out for the final postseason spot. So, the Seahawks travel to Washington DC for a Wild Card matchup with the Redskins. If they're able to pull out a win in our nation's capital, they'll face either the Niners or Falcons on the road. To face Atlanta on the following Sunday, root for the Packers to pull out a win against the Vikings. If you'd rather travel down to Candlestick to face the Niners on Saturday night, root for Christian Ponder and Minnesota to upset the Pack.

Adrian Peterson talks about falling just short of rushing record

Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson finished the season nine yards short of the NFL season rushing record, and he had one person on his mind afterward: Eric Dickerson, the man who still has the record. “I know Eric Dickerson is feeling so good right now,” Peterson said with a chuckle. “But God willing, I'll get it next year.” Peterson's run for the record was even more remarkable when you consider he tore ligaments in his left knee last season, an injury that is difficult for a running back to return from. Peterson gained 199 yards Sunday and finished the 2012 season with 2,097 yards rushing. Eric Dickerson's mark of 2,105 yards, set in 1984 with the L.A. Rams, remains the season rushing record. “Ultimately we got the 'W,' " Peterson said, referencing the Vikings' victory over Green Bay, which put them into the playoffs. "We said during the week, if it happens, it happens. Don't focus on it."

Hillary Clinton hospitalized after doctors discover blood clot

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was hospitalized Sunday after doctors discovered a blood clot during a follow-up exam related to a concussion she suffered this month, her spokesman said. She is expected to remain at New York Presbyterian Hospital for the next 48 hours so doctors can monitor her condition and treat her with anticoagulants, said Philippe Reines, deputy assistant secretary of state. "Her doctors will continue to assess her condition, including other issues associated with her concussion," Reines said. "They will determine if any further action is required." Reines did not specify where the clot was discovered

Andy Reid, Lovie Smith, Norv Turner and Romeo Crennel among NFL coaches fired on Black Monday

After nine seasons in Chicago, a stretch that includes a Super Bowl appearance, the Bears cut ties with head coach Lovie Smith Monday after the team misses the postseason following a 7-1 start.

NFL playoff schedule: 49ers secure bye with Vikings win over Packers

Fooch's Note: Thanks as always to the 49ers social media folks for allowing me to use their pictures. This awesome shot comes via their Instagram account. Adrian "All Day, Purple Jesus" Peterson, indeed! About 15 minutes after the San Francisco 49ers defeated the Arizona Cardinals, the 49ers received a huge gift from the Great White North. The Minnesota Vikings pulled off the upset win at home over the Green Bay Packers, providing the 49ers with the No. 2 seed and always necessary first round bye. The Vikings secured their own spot in the playoffs with the win and will travel to Lambeau Field for a rematch of a pretty awesome matchup today. That means the Seattle Seahawks will travel to face the winner of the Washington Redskins-Dallas Cowboys Sunday Night Football contest. The high seed from those four teams will travel to San Francisco in two weeks, while the low seed will travel to Atlanta to face the top-seeded Falcons. For the 49ers, the bye will be particularly big. Defensive tackle Justin Smith is recovering from a partially torn triceps muscle, and every extra day off helps. He will need surgery in the offseason, but he believes he can gut it out through the playoffs. I imagine he plays in two weeks, but I doubt we get any significant confirmation between now and then. Smith will likely get very little practice as he rests that arm. The other question will be what to do at the kicker position. David Akers was horrible in the first half, and only slightly better in the second half before injuring his ankle on a PAT. It will be interesting to see if the 49ers bring anybody in for at least a workout before the divisional round. For now, though, we get to take a moment to relax and enjoy a hard fought division title and bye. The 49ers have a lot of work to do if they want to make any sort of noise in the playoffs. Fortunately, they have time to assess things and make some adjustments. GO NINERS!

Bethenny Frankel and husband of 2 years separating

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Bethenny Frankel and husband Jason Hoppy are separating.
The 42-year-old TV personality, chef, author and entrepreneur told The Associated Press Sunday that the split brings her "great sadness."
"This was an extremely difficult decision that as a woman and a mother, I have to accept as the best choice for our family," Frankel said. "We have love and respect for one another and will continue to amicably co-parent our daughter who is and will always remain our first priority. This is an immensely painful and heartbreaking time for us."
Frankel and Hoppy were married in 2010 and have a daughter, Bryn, who was born that same year. The couple's courtship and marriage were documented in two reality series, "Bethenny Getting Married?" and "Bethenny Ever After..." Frankel gained fame as a star of "The Real Housewives of New York City." Since her stint on the Bravo show, she has written four books, released a fitness video and founded her Skinnygirl line of cocktails, shapewear and nutritional supplements.
She launched a talk show, "Bethenny," over the summer that is set to air nationally on Fox stations in 2013.

Texas' Case McCoy, Jordan Hicks focus of sexual assault allegations

Texas quarterback Case McCoy and linebacker Jordan Hicks are the focus of a sexual assault investigation by San Antonio police, multiple sources confirmed to 247Sports.com. A source within the school's administration also identified the players to ESPN.com. A source with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press that McCoy and Hicks were sent home Friday evening for missing curfew. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the school wasn't releasing the names of the suspended players. Case McCoy (AP Photo) The Longhorns are in San Antonio preparing for Saturday's Alamo Bowl game against Oregon State. — Alamo Bowl preview: Oregon vs. Texas, 6:45 p.m. ET | Complete bowl schedule, results Sgt. Javier Salazar, a San Antonio police spokesman, told the AP only that detectives are in the early stages of investigating a case of alleged sexual assault in the downtown area. Investigators are interviewing witnesses and collecting forensic evidence, he said. San Antonio television station KENS-TV was the first to report the investigation. Longhorns coach Mack Brown said Friday that two players were being sent home for violating team rules, but he provided no names. "This has been reported: We had a couple young men that broke team rules last night. They have been suspended from the team and they will be sent home," Brown said at a previously scheduled news conference in San Antonio. "They will not be available for the game and I will not address any more questions in that matter." A heavily redacted police report says a 21-year-old woman told police she believed she was assaulted around 2 a.m. Friday after inviting two men to her hotel room. The woman told police that she had had several drinks when she invited the men to her hotel. She later alleged that one of the men assaulted her while the other "just stood there and watched," the report said. Police said they observed bruises on the woman's right knee and left bicep. No charges have been filed. The Longhorns are staying at a hotel about a mile away from the hotel where the alleged assault occurred. After talking to police, the woman was taken to a San Antonio hospital, where she was seen by a sexual assault nurse examiner, according to the report. The two suspects also were taken to the hospital and examined by the nurse, the report says. McCoy, the younger brother of former Texas standout and current NFL quarterback Colt McCoy, is a backup to David Ash this season. The junior passed for 722 yards and six touchdowns. Hicks, also a junior, started three games this year before a hip injury that caused him to sit out the next eight contests.

Case McCoy: Realistic Expectations for Texas Longhorns QB in 2013

Things can't get much worse for Texas quarterback Case McCoy, on the field or off of it. Four weeks after throwing two interceptions against Kansas State in a losing effort in his only start of 2012, the junior signal-caller was sent home one day before the Longhorn's Valero Alamo Bowl matchup with Oregon State in San Antonio, along with linebacker Jordan Hicks for violating team rules according to an ESPN.com report. Head coach Mack Brown stated the following on Friday (via ESPN.com): This has been reported: We had a couple young men that broke team rules last night. They have been suspended from the team and they will be sent home. They will not be available for the game and I will not address any more questions in that matter. That same ESPN.com report stated that KENS-TV in San Antonio quoted local police as saying that a pair of Longhorns players were being investigated for an alleged sexual assault that took place early Friday morning. However, no charges had been filed at the time of the report. For now, we can only speculate on McCoy's football future. Although McCoy's future in Austin is uncertain for the time being, we'll assume he returns for his senior season with Texas. In that case, here's what Longhorns fans can expect from the younger McCoy brother in 2013. Sophomore quarterback David Ash, who played much of this season for the Longhorns and who will play Saturday against Oregon State in the Alamo Bowl, will be back as a junior in 2013, which means that McCoy will likely be relegated to a backup role if he's back with the team. McCoy is used to that role, but as a senior looking to boost his draft stock it may be tough to swallow. Case McCoy has just 1,756 passing yards, 13 touchdowns and seven interceptions heading into his senior year. Erich Schlegel/Getty Images But like the past two seasons in Austin, injuries and quarterback changes will happen, and when they do McCoy will provide the Longhorns with a serviceable option. I wouldn't bet on him to throw for more than 1,000 yards in 2013 though. McCoy is an awkward situation heading into his senior season. He doesn't have the credentials that his older brother did coming out of college, and that will surely hurt his chances at making the cut for the NFL. Will Case McCoy play his senior season at Texas? Yes No Submit Vote vote to see results Will Case McCoy play his senior season at Texas?Yes23.4%No76.6%Total votes: 2,711 His lack of solid decision-making under center has held him back with Texas, and will likely turn out to the weakness that keeps him from achieving future success in the sport. McCoy's four interceptions against Baylor as a sophomore highlighted his occasional poor judgment on the field. And his recent suspension signals that he is not yet ready become the sort of leader a quarterback at Texas must be. If Case McCoy is back in Austin in 2013 for his senior season, expectations will and should be low. At this point in time, McCoy looks to be nothing more than a quality backup for a power conference college football team.

UFC 155 bonuses: Miller, Lauzon, Duffee, Moraga earn $65,000 awards

LAS VEGAS – Jim Miller, Joe Lauzon, Todd Duffee and John Moraga each earned $65,000 bonuses for their performances at Saturday's UFC 155 event.

Duffee earned the "Knockout of the Night" award, Moraga won "Submission of the Night" and Miller and Lauzon picked up "Fight of the Night" honors.

MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) learned of the winners and bonus amounts at the night's post-event press conference, where they were announced by UFC President Dana White.

UFC 155 took place at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The event's main card aired on pay-per-view following prelims on FX and Facebook.

Miller (22-4 MMA, 11-3 UFC) spent the first round battering Lauzon (22-8 MMA, 9-5 UFC) and bloodying him relentlessly with elbows and fists. But in the second, Lauzon was able to start to mount a comeback. And in the third, he went after it with gusto – though his submission attempts proved to be too little, too late. Still, it was the one fight out of the first four on the main card that had the crowd on its feet.

Duffee (8-2 MMA, 2-1 UFC) made a triumphant return to the UFC after a lengthy absence and survived a few rough moments with Philip De Fries (9-2 MMA, 2-2 UFC) to notch a first-round TKO. Duffee landed several big bombs with De Fries pushed up against the fence, and then a giant uppercut dropped him for good.

Moraga (12-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) spent the first two rounds of his fight against Chris Cariaso (14-4 MMA, 4-2 UFC) on the wrong end of the striking game. But in the third, Moraga was able to get the fight to the fence, and he transitioned from a front headlock to a standing guillotine that eventually was too much for Cariaso.

UFC 155 Results: Cain Velasquez Reclaims Heavyweight Title

COMMENTARY | The UFC 155 main card got off to a dull start, but Jim Miller and Joe Lauzon reenergized the crowd, putting on an entertaining show MMA fans won't forget anytime soon. Here are the results of the entire UFC 155 fight card held on Dec. 29, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas: Cain Velasquez def. Junior dos Santos Cain looked like a completely different man during his UFC 155 rematch against dos Santos, aggressively pressuring the Brazilian during the opening round. He hurt dos Santos with a big right hook early in the fight, dragging "Cigano" to the ground shortly after. Junior kept trying to get back up, but Cain refused to let go, controlling the remainder of the round with his wrestling. Dos Santos did a good job of getting back to his feet as the fight progressed, but he didn't have any answers for Cain's takedowns. Velasquez dominated the remainder of their fight with his wrestling, pressuring dos Santos on the ground and against the cage. The Octagon-side judges scored the bout 50-45, 50-44, and 50-43, all in favor of Velasquez who reclaims the UFC's heavyweight title. Jim Miller def. Joe Lauzon Miller came out swinging at UFC 155, hitting Lauzon with everything besides the kitchen sink in the opening round. Within a few minutes, Lauzon's face was a bloody mess. Miller switched things up in the second round, immediately taking "J-Lau" down. He transitioned to mount shortly after, landing some vicious shots in the process. However, Lauzon turned things around with two minutes left in the round, sweeping to top position. He stayed on top for the remainder of the round, even threatening with an inverted heel-hook. Miller decided to keep the fight standing during the third round, and he went right back to picking Lauzon apart. To his credit, Lauzon refused to quit, landing a few hard shots of his own. He even tried to steal the victory in the final seconds of the bout, holding on to a guillotine choke as time ran out. Unfortunately for Lauzon, it was too little too late, as all three judges scored the fight 29-28 in favor of Miller. Definitely one of the most entertaining MMA fights in 2012. Constantinos Philippou def. Tim Boetsch Boetsch got off to a good start at UFC 155, roughing up Philippou against the cage and on the ground in the first round. However, he apparently broke his right hand during one of their exchanges. Boetsch didn't look the same in the second round, unable to get the fight back on the canvas. He decided to pull guard, but that only made things worse, as Philippou landed some vicious shots on the ground. Battered and bloodied up, Tim decided to pull guard again, and Philippou pounded away. Referee Kim Winslow gave him every chance to fight back, but "The Barbarian" didn't have anything left, forcing her to step in and save him at 2:11 of the third round. Yushin Okami def. Alan Belcher The UFC 155 rematch between the two went a lot like their first encounter, with Yushin dominating the fight with his wrestling. Belcher had a few moments during the bout, and he even got some help from referee Chris Tognoni, who didn't seem to be a fan of the ground game, unfairly forcing the fight back up a few times. However, Yushin's wrestling was too much for Belcher. All three Octagon-side judges gave Okami the nod. Derek Brunson def. Chris Leben Brunson came out with a smart gameplan at UFC 155, quickly closing the distance and taking Leben to the ground. He kept Leben grounded for the majority of the first round. After getting put on his back again early in the second round, Chris managed to keep the fight standing for the remainder of the round. However, Brunson held his own in the striking department, and he had some more success with his takedowns in the final round. All three judges scored the fight for Brunson who pulls off a mild upset in his UFC debut.
